Red deer were introduced to New Zealand in the 1850's to provide sport and game meat for the early colonists. Without any natural predators and with millions of acres of inaccessible forests in which to hide, the populations exploded over the next 100 years until they had reached pest proportions.
With the advent of new technology such as helicopter recovery in the 1960's, the wild populations were brought under control allowing the new concept of deer farming. Since then New Zealand has become the world's biggest deer farming nation based on the two products of the Red Deer - lean venison and velvet, the name given to the growing antlers of the stags which are harvested at the stage when the blood based ingredients are at their most potent.
High Peak has been farming deer for 40 years and has bred red deer specifically for both high yielding antler velvet and lean fast growing venison. With over 4000 head in our Red Deer herd, High Peak is one of the largest premium Red Deer properties in New Zealand.
